    • Go Away White is an album I've been waiting more than 20 years to hear, and the good news is that it was worth the wait.  The latest -- and last, no...for real this time -- album from Bauhaus is fantastic.  More importantly, it's [...] - Bryan Chaffin

    • The Life Pursuit is a sort of Reeses Peanut Butter Cup. You get Belle & Sebastian's peanut butter (its wistful, often irresistible pop) dipped in a 'Have A Nice Day!' and glam 70s chocolate. Although I'm guessing that most Belle & Sebastian [...] - Robyn Weisman

Just a Thought - Seven Days (and Counting) Trying to Get an iPhone

On Friday, July 11, 2008, I figured I'd go out and interview a few of those guys in line for an iPhone, take a few photos, write up a story and be done with iPhone 3G coverage. Then I'd be able to get one for myself, my real reason for the trip. That was seven days ago (and counting!), and I am still waiting! What's a gadget geek to do? ...more...

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.19: "Crossroads, Pt. 2" [Season Finale]
    • So what do we have when all is said and done, when we've finished lamenting that mean, mean "See you in 2008!" teaser, compiling our latest thesis on what it truly means to be a Cylon and trying to figure out which products Roslin uses to keep her hair looking so...presidential?

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.18: "Crossroads, Pt. 1"
    • Finally, Laura Roslin emerges from the shadow of her last few throwaway plotlines (going to the gym, talking union politics, etc, snore) and towers over The Trial of Gaius Baltar like the steely, presidential figure of awesomeness we all know her to be. I knew Lee was about to get schooled when she took off her glasses.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.17: "The Son Also Rises"
    • A character like Romo Lampkin can go one of two ways. Either the multitude of ticks and quirks (sunglasses, trench coat, freaky pet cat) coalesce into a wannabe cool character trying way too hard and thereby annoying me all to hell, or the acting and writing around said character are strong enough to make those ticks seem like groovy enhancements to a genuinely cool new presence.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.16: "Maelstrom"
    • Everyone who's been whining for the last few weeks about the lack of Big and Important Events can shut up now, I guess. And that includes yours truly. I'm so wrecked that even conjuring the magical image of a post-coital Anders is doing nothing for me.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.15: "Dirty Hands"
    • This week, Chief gets an inside look at the crappy working conditions on a Tylium refining ship, which leads to a few insights regarding class concerns in this evolving, wartime society. He tries to bring these concerns up with Adama and Roslin, but they crabbily point out that there's a war going on and everyone has it bad.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.14: "A Day In the Life"
    • Ya know, I would normally be all for a slice o' life type of episode -- a small, quiet thing dealing with our Galactican's various dilemmas during this Cylon-free period. But this one feels stitched together from discarded B-plots, rightfully deleted scenes and Adama's old mustache hairs...

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.13: "The Woman King"
    • So I'm kind of getting the idea that this episode is not inspiring raves amongst my fellow Galacticans. In fact, this morning I heard someone compare it to season 2's snoozy "Black Market," which...I'm sorry, but that's impossible. No episode is as bad as "Black Market. It's A Fact.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.12: "Taking a Break From All Your Worries"
    • Prior to this episode, I think I was maybe the last person in all of fandom still intrigued by the Angsty Quadrangle of Doom. But if this is the explosive moment in Quadrangle story development that we were building to...eh, never mind. Over it.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.11: "Rapture"
    • "Rapture" is, in the parlance of X-Files fandom, a mythology episode.  It's not about the individual characters, and it's not intended to offer the viewers exposition. Instead, this episode moves ahead several of the broad, sweeping story arcs of the series, revealing many things in the process.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.10: "The Eye of Jupiter"
    • This is gonna be a gushy one, you guys. Everything comes together right here and it does so in the most satisfying of ways, just like when I put Buncha Crunch in my popcorn and shake it up and it coalesces into the most glorious, salty-sweet opus of deliciousness.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.9: "The Passage"
    • In this eppy, the fleet is experiencing a food crisis and everyone has to fight over the meager remaining rations. One can almost sense some of the other pilots shooting surreptitious dirty looks in FormerlyFat Apollo's direction. Sharon finds a planet where there is a bunch of disgusting-but-edible algae. Unfortunately, the fleet has to cross a dangerous, radioactive-y nebula to get there.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.8: "Unfinished Business"
    • I love this episode so much. I love the detail-rich focus on key characters and relationships. I love that it is placed exactly here in the season 3 sequence -- late enough to be intensely satisfying, early enough to still be meaningful. Most of all, I love that Adama and Roslin get totally high and drunk and maybe possibly Do It in the hot New Caprican sand.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.7: "Hero"
    • I would also like to say, for the record, that I am very much in favor of episodes where characters are developed and we Learn Lessons, so long as the Learning of Lessons is not sledgehammered into our tiny little skulls until we can no longer form the words to cry out in protest.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.6: "A Measure of Salvation"
    • You know, sometimes when I'm writing about this show, I feel like my gush-o-meter goes to 11. I try really hard not to get too foamy at the mouth, but sometimes it just happens. And since this season thus far kicks every kind of butt imaginable, I don't see it letting up too soon.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.5: "Torn"
    • You all knew it was coming, right? Finally, after whiling away the hours on such important projects as mustache shaving and calling Lee a fatass, Adama gets his Big Frakkin' Awesome Moment. And I loved every second!

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.4: "Collaborators"
    • "Keep jumping." So sayeth Adama to Fat Apollo. And so sayeth me, just a little bit, to this show. I suppose after all the crazy excitement of the New Caprica storyline, our return to Galactica proper was bound to be a wee bit of a letdown, but perhaps that's just because there were no great escapes or tearful reunions to be had?

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.3: "Exodus, Pt. 2"
    • I guess the show wanted to hold back a little on its generally merciless assault on my tear ducts. But still -- I really wanted to see these key relationships touched on during the New Capricans' grand, emotional return to Galactica. Instead, we got a rather long, lovingly-rendered sequence in which Adama shaves off his porn star moustache.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.2: "Exodus, Pt. 1"
    • Have we ever seen a finer one-eyed performance than that of Michael Hogan as Colonel Tigh, reacting to Lady Tigh's betrayal? So much conflict and shock contained in that one twitchy eye! Anyway, lots of building in this eppy, lots of winding me up for what is hopefully going to be an amazing pay-off.

  • Battlestar Galactica 3.1: "The Occupation" and "Precipice"
    • So who do we think is the creepiest Cylon? Is it Leoben, who has Starbuck trapped in the world's most frakked up Lifetime movie ever? Or Brother Dean Stockwell. You know what? Even though I will soak my head in a vat of bleach if I have to hear any further elaboration on "the swirl," I must go with Leoben

  • Battlestar Galactica: Season 1 & 2 Recap
    • OK, so here's where I fell in love with Battlestar Galactica. It was the first season episode, "You Can't Go Home Again," and Starbuck is stranded on some planet and she finds the Cylon Raider she just shot down...
