Apple Adds Chomp Bits to iOS 6 App Store Discovery

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page have reportedly been in behind-the-scenes discussions about “a range of intellectual property matters,” including the epic mobile patent battle being fought by proxy. According to online reports, the two tech execs have been chatting by phone, while lower level talks have also been taking place.

Amazon told the world on Thursday that its budget tablet entry, Kindle Fire, has sold out. Bryan CHaffin thinks that is a curious term unless Amazon intended the device to have a limited run, but we can presume that it means Amazon won’t make any more as it transitions to a Kindle Fire 2 update. Speaking of which, an image of a Kindle Fire 2 was “leaked”—no doubt it’s a coincidence.

Delta to Roll Out 4,500 iPads at Airport Restaurants

Delta Air Lines is rolling out 4,500 iPads at airport restaurants as part of a plan to improve food service for travelers. The airline places 250 iPads in restaurants at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport on Wednesday, and plans to have more than 4,500 of Apple’s multimedia tablets at three of its hubs over the next year.

Gazelle Reports Spike in Used Samsung Device Sells

Used kit broker Gazelle.com (Gazelle) has seen a sharp spike in Samsung device sells in the immediate aftermath of Apple’s sweeping courtroom victory over the convicted copycat. Gazelle told Marketwatch that there was a 50 percent increase in Samsung device sales by customers in the three days following the jury’s verdict, and that this has resulted in an average 10 percent price decrease for those devices.

Judge Lucy Koh set December 6 for a hearing in Apple and Samsung’s post-trial case to review Apple’s request for triple damages and a permanent injunction blocking the sale of several Samsung smartphones in the United States. She will also review Samsung’s motions to overturn parts of the jury’s verdict that it infringed on several of Apple’s mobile device patents.

Moto Licenses Standards-Essential Patents to Apple in Germany

Apple and Motorola Mobility have reached an agreement of sorts for the iOS device maker to license Moto’s standards-essential patents (SEPs) in Germany. The two haven’t come to an agreement on how much Apple will pay, but have agreed to the license—if they can’t come to an agreement, a rate will be set by a German court.

Rumors that Apple will include Near Field Communication, or NFC, technology in the next iPhone suffered a blow on Tuesday when AnandTech listed the technical problems associated with the feature based on what has been reported to be the next iPhone’s case design. Adding to the potential NFC death blow was The Loop’s Jim Dalyrymple backing up AnandTech’s analysis.
