2005 Was the Year of the iPod in Japan

With around 60% of the market through mid-November, the iPod dominates Japan's MP3 player market. Rival Sony holds a market share just under 10%, according to an article in The Daily Yomiuri by reporter Steve McClure.

Japan's iTunes Music Store, which opened its virtual doors on Aug. 4, is also the top digital music sales outlet in the country, although overall music sales have continued to slide. Through November, shipments by the 41 companies in the Recording Industry Association of Japan were down 2% compared to the same period in 2004. Even though digital music sales in the September quarter were up 125%, that wasn't enough to offset the downturn.

Mr. McClure's article also details the situation with Japan's top recording artists.
