AI: iPhone 2.0.2 Update Performance Affected by Those with Older Versions.

AT&T and Apple are encouraging iPhone 3G customers to update to OS X iPhone 2.0.2, not only for the value of the update, but also because users still with 2.0 and 2.0.1 on the same tower contribute to continuing problems, according to Apple Insider on Thursday.
Recently, Apple and AT&T sent every iPhone user a text message urging them to update to 2.0.2. The urgency of that message was put into clearer context by Apple Insider based on a technical description provided by a "source close to AT&T."
The source explained that version 2.0.2 addressed a problem with the iPhone 3G’s power control that could cause dropped calls. The issue is complicated by the fact that if the iPhone 3G pulls too much power, it can drain the tower of available transmit signal. In addition, "in a mixed environment where users are running 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2, the power control problems of 2.0 and 2.0.1 will affect the 2.0.2 users," Apple Insider reported.
The iPod Observer contacted AT&T’s Mark Siegel for confirmation of the technical information in that story, but Mr. Siegel said that AT&T has no comment on the issue and referred iPO to Apple. As of this writing, Jennifer Bowcock, Apple’s public relations spokesperson for the iPhone, had not responded.
