AP Will Offer Mobile News Network Designed for iPhone

The Associated Press (AP) announced on Monday that it will develop a new, ad supported news service designed for the Apple iPhone, but will work with other smartphones, according to AP President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Curley. The service, called Mobile News Network, is expected to launch this summer.

Faced with struggling newspaper members, the AP said it’s working with cell phone manufacturers and carriers to develop a user interface for the new service. The news would be oargainzed by ZIP code and local ads would be sold by particpating newspapers in addition to national ad networks.

Both stories and photos will be delivered to advanced cell phones.

The AP reported that newspapers have been seeing a steady decline in revenues and have had to cut staff. The new service appears intended to exploit the new ways consumers want to get their news via new technologies like the iPhone.
