AT&T Expands Wireless Coverage with $2.5B Deal
Monday, October 8th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
AT&T announced on Monday that it has entered into an agreement to purchase a 700MHz-range spectrum license from the Delaware-based Aloha Partners. The license will cost AT&T US$2.5 billion, and will cover 196 million people in 281 markets.
The deal will give AT&T an additional 12MHz of spectrum coverage in many major metropolitan areas including all of the top ten U.S. markets, and 72 of the top 100 U.S. markets.
Once completed, the additional frequencies should allow AT&T to offer its cell phone customers, including iPhone users, better coverage, especially in more congested markets. AT&T expects to complete the purchase in the next six to nine months pending required government approvals.
