AT&T Suspends Parental Block Service for Safety [UPDATED]

AT&T recently introduced Smart Limits, a monthly service that allows parents to control the usage of their children’s mobile phone. However, the service was suspended when technical problems were found with 911 service, according to Computerworld on Monday.

The issue has to do with the a user calling 911, then the connection is dropped, and the 911 operator is unable to call back.

AT&T said that they had "no indication" that an E911 operator ever was blocked in making a return call, and it found the problem in its own evaluations of the service, according to AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel. "We thought we’d put safety first and temporarily suspend Smart Limits until this is resolved," he said. "We apologize and think this is absolutely the right thing to do. We will relaunch it as soon as possible. People want it back as soon as possible."

Since this is a Web-based management service for AT&T mobile phone accounts, it would appear to apply to iPhone customers as well. AT&T’s Mark Siegel did not immediately respond to iPO’s request for confirmation.

[UPDATE: September 25th. AT&T’s Mark Siegel has told iPO that Smart Limits service does indeed apply to iPhone customers. Accordingly, if applicable, they should monitor AT&T’s announcements. iPO will also continue to track the story.]
