Adobe Unveils New Flash Player for Cell Phones
Monday, October 1st, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Adobe has produced a version of its Flash player for mobile devices, dubbed Flash Lite 3, that is designed to offer video quality on cell phones that more closely matches desktop computers. No word yet on whether or not this is the version of Flash that will eventually end up on Apples iPhone, but Nokia has already signed on for its cell phones, according to Reuters.
Adobes mobile unit boss, Gary Kovaks, said that Flash Lite 3 is "the most significant advance weve made in mobile." He added that this new version brings the desktop and mobile versions of Flash closer to a simultaneous release cycle.
Should Nokia manage to release new cell phone models with Flash Lite 3 before Apple can add Flash support to the iPhone, and potentially the iPod touch, it could give the company a leg up in the mobile multimedia market. Le Epting, head of the cell makers community site Forum Nokia, commented "Flash Lite 3 will enable us to deliver richer content to our customers, such as videos and animated ringtones."
Apple, however, may be in a better position to offer rich Flash support first since the company can add new features to the iPhone through software updates. Most cell makers must release new models with features pre-installed.
