After AT&T’s 3G Network Comes 4G/LTE
Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
AT&T will be using its recent acquisition of the 700 MHz spectrum space to roll out its fourth generation wireless network, according to Information Week on Friday. The next generation technology is called Long Term Evolution (LTE).
"Our winning bids for B block spectrum, combined with the C block spectrum we acquired from Aloha Partners, significantly enhances AT&Ts spectrum portfolio, which is already one of the broadest, highest-quality, and most efficient in the country," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&Ts wireless unit.
"With fewer costly and complex regulations, we have the certainty and flexibility needed to move faster in rolling out new mobile technology and more customer choices in devices and applications," Mr. de la Vega added.
How long that eventual move from 3G to LTE will take was not discussed. Meanwhile, AT&T is aggressively adding to its 3G network in the U.S. and expects to have 3G service in 350 major markets by the end of 2008. For now, thats going to make a lot of Apple customers very happy.
