Amazon Launches Video on Demand Service

Amazon’s Internet-based Video on Demand Service moved out of the beta phase on Thursday. The service allows Mac and Windows users to rent or purchase movies for playback on their computer, and also supports Sony BRAVIA TVs with Internet Video Link.
Amazon Video on Demand currently offers about 40,000 movies and TV shows with movie pricing in line with Apple’s iTunes Store at US$9.99 to $14.99 a title, and $3.99 for rentals. TV shows cost $1.99 each.
Unlike iTunes, Amazon Video on Demand is Web browser-based, although it does also support Internet Video Link-ready BRAVIA TVs and TiVo. It also forgoes commercials, unlike NBC and Fox’s Hulu.
Amazon’s new service also includes content from NBC and its properties, which has been missing from the iTunes Store ever since Apple and NBC had a falling out over TV show pricing. Amazon Video on Demand could be a service that offers the iTunes Store some real competition since it offers multi-platform compatibility and a wide selection of shows.
