Analyst: Video Downloads ‘Perfect Test Bed For Full-Length TV Shows’

Vamsi Sistla, an analyst with ABI Research, on Thursday issued a report in which he explained that the burgeoning market for video downloads to portable players such as iPods "will be a perfect test bed for full-length television shows." He expects, however, that full-length episodes of TV shows won't be the bread and butter of that market in 2006; he sees short-form video continuing to be the format of choice.
"The mainstream broadcast model is an extraordinarily expensive way to trial new concepts and shows," Mr. Sistla said in a statement. "Over 70% of all new shows don't survive the first season. The logic of trying short versions on emerging platforms at relatively low cost before committing to the expense of hour-long TV productions will soon be apparent to content owners."
The analyst added that the offerings from ABC, NBC and others have led to the belief of content providers that "they seem pretty happy with what the portable and mobile telephony industries can provide them. But a network can save much more on upfront program development costs than it will make by selling short clips for $1.99 each."
