Anxious iPhone Users Ferret out 2.0 Software
Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple hasnt officially released iPhone and iPod touch Software 2.0 to the public yet, but that hasnt stopped excited iPhone fans from tracking down the update. Thanks to some digging through Apples XML, some intrepid iPhone fans managed to find the URL to what appears to be the version of iPhone Software 2.0 that Apple will distribute through iTunes, according to Mac Rumors.
The software update appears to be a fairly involved process that deletes all of the data from your handheld, so a complete backup ahead of time is in order. The update is not, however, compatible with the iPod touch.
Once downloaded, iPhone owners can Option-click the Check for Update button in iTunes and then navigate to the firmware file to install the update.
iPhone Software 2.0 is required for App Store support, a feature that is prompting many people to download and install the update ahead of its official release. The App Store, Apples iTunes Store-based application distribution system is already online and is offering over 500 applications for download.
While the firmware update file seems to be safe, cautious iPhone owners may want to wait until Apple officially releases the software.
