App Store to Launch with over 500 iPhone Apps
Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
When Apples iPhone 3G begins selling on July 11, there will already be over 500 native applications waiting for it at the App Store. The App Store is Apples iTunes Store-like system for distributing and selling third-party iPhone and iPod touch applications.
"The reaction from developers has been very, very positive and were opening the App Store with over 500 native iPhone applications available for immediate purchase and download," said senior vice president of world wide marketing, Phil Schiller.
According to Apple, over 125 of the applications available when the App Store launches will be free.
Sega, MySpace, Facebook, Travelocity, The Associated Press, and more will all have applications available.
The App Store will require iPhone and iPod touch Software 2.0, iTunes 7.7, and an iPhone, iPhone 3G, or iPod touch. Apples iPhone 3G is set to go on sale on July 11 in about 20 countries. It will include support for faster 3G wireless data networks while maintaining support for EDGE, includes a built-in GPS, access to third-party applications through the App Store, and more.
