Apple, AT&T Answer More iPhone Questions, Hint at iTunes Update

Prospective iPhone buyers looking for even more information about Apple’s soon to be released combination iPod and smartphone can turn to new question and answer Web pages from both Apple and AT&T. The Apple Questions and Answers page also links to the iPhone specifications page, which lists iTunes 7.3, not iTunes 7.2, as a requirement for the new product.

Apple’s Questions and Answers page notes that once you complete the iPhone activation and are waiting for your cellphone number to port from your old carrier to AT&T, you can make calls, but won’t be able to receive any. Once the phone number transfer is complete, you will be able to receive calls, too.

Apple also recommends that you use the SIM card that comes with the iPhone instead of using your existing AT&T SIM card. AT&T, however, is more explicit, and states that you must use the pre-installed SIM card.

The AT&T iPhone Frequently Asked Questions page discusses other topics as well, including iPhone activation, upgrading from a different AT&T phone, and billing.

AT&T states that customers wanting to return their iPhone can do so within 14 days of purchase, and must take it back to the same store they bought it from. A 10 percent restocking fee will be charged for open box returns.

The answers that Apple and AT&T are offering on the iPhone and the activation process make it clear that great effort has been put into streamlining the experience as much as possible, it also looks like those efforts favor new, and not existing, AT&T customers. Existing customers won’t be able to continue using their current SIM card, they can’t activate their iPhone in-store like their previous phone, and GoPhone customers must open a new account with a new phone number.

The iPhone will be available for purchase at 6 p.m. local time on Friday, June 29. It will be available at Apple and AT&T retail stores as well as the Apple online store. The 4GB model will be priced at US$499, and the 8GB model will cost $599.
