Apple Announces 100 Million App Store Downloads

SAN FRANCISCO - At Apple’s "Let’s Rock" event, Steve Jobs announced that Apple iPhone and iPod touch owners have downloaded more than 100 million applications from the App Store.
Mr. Jobs didn’t state what the actual breakdown in sales was, commercial vs, free, but Apple’s press release did note that there are more than 3,000 applications available in the App Store, with over 90 percent priced at less than US$10 and over 600 are free.
Apple pointed to several success stories related to the developer opportunities with the App Store. "As an 18 year old iPhone Developer Program member I won an Apple WWDC student scholarship and used the opportunity to complete my app over the summer," said Bryan Henry, developer of Equivalence. "It was a lot of fun to pull it together and certainly the most lucrative summer job I’ve ever had as I made over $8,000 in my first month of App Store sales."
Applications can be purchased either via iTunes and synced to the iPhone, iPod or purchased directly from the device over Wi-Fi or the data network. The App Store also notifies the user when an update is available for any of the downloaded applications.
In a related announcement, Apple revealed that the number of iTunes accounts has reached 65 million.
