Apple Decreases Parts Cost in iPhone 3G

iSuppli, a Silicon Valley company that specializes in cataloging the cost of parts in electronic products, has estimated that Apple has shaved about US$50 from the original cost of the iPhone in the new iPhone 3G.

The cost of 3G parts will be about US$173 compared to $226 for the iPhone 2G, according to Arik Hesseldahl with BusinessWeek. iSuppli will release their numbers on Tuesday.

It’s important to monitor the cost of parts in order to gauge the profitability of products -- as well as track which companies have won profitable contracts to supply components to Apple. Hon Hai Precision Industry in China manufacturers the iPhone.

Component winners include Infineon in Germany who makes the 3G wireless chipset, and Broadcom is supplying the GPs chipset. Other than that, few things have changed inside the iPhone 3G.

"They have done a good job in using what worked well with the first one and making improvements where it mattered," said iSuppli analyst Jagdish Rebello.

Apple has to pay not only for the hardware, but also for licensing. For example, Qualcomm owns several patents related to the 3G technologies. iSuppli estimates that others collecting royalties may be Ericsson in Sweden and Nokia in Finland.

Reducing the component costs is an item always on Apple’s plate. It allows them to put pressure on the competition and increases their gross margins, something analysts and investors pay close attention to.
