Apple, DoCoMo Talk iPhone in Japan
Monday, December 17th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and NTT DoCoMo president Masao Makamura have apparently been in talks over a deal to bring the iPhone to Japan. So far, Apples combination iPod and smart phone is available in only a handful of countries, and moving into Japan would open the door to one of the most sophisticated cell phone markets in the world, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Sources close to the negotiations state that both sides are negotiating terms of the agreement, and that one point of contention stems from how much Apple wants for its cut of subscriber revenue. That comes as no surprise since revenue sharing was a sticking point in the deals Apple struck with carriers in other countries, too.
DoCoMo may be Apples first choice as its partner in Japan, but it isnt the companys only option. Apparently Apple is also talking with Softbank -- a cell service provider that is reportedly very interested an iPhone deal.
Neither Apple nor DoCoMo are commenting on the rumored negotiations.
