Apple Goes After iPod Knock-off
Wednesday, November 30th, 2005 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple is accusing Iops of producing an MP3 player that copies the iPod mini's design, according to The Korea Times. The Korean MP3 maker claims that it received an official complaint from Apple in October demanding that it stop selling two models, and compensate the iPod maker for lost sales.
The MP3 players in question, the Iops Jock, and the Iops Z3, copy the exterior design of the mini, according to Apple. Iops denies the claim, and is waiting to see what Apple's next move will be.
Han Pil-kyu, Iops public relations manager commented "We are about to launch a massive promotion campaign of the Jock model this month, and we are in partnership with SK Telecom for its mobile music service. We cannot overlook or give up this business easily."
Iop's Jock MP3 player is about the same size as the mini, and has a display above a round control wheel. It also comes in assorted colors, also like the mini. In contrast, the Jock has a color screen, FM radio and voice recording, and can play videos.
Iops isn't pulling its products from the market, which may force the two companies into a legal battle. Apple did not comment on the situation.
