Apple Joins Protest Against Swiss iPod Tax

Apple and other MP3 player makers have joined together to protest a Swiss tax that could add up to 20% to the cost of the devices, according to Macworld UK's Jonny Evans. The Swiss government plans to put the new tax into effect March 1 and assess it on the sales of flash- and hard drive-based MP3 players as well as audio/video recorders with hard drives.
Apple and its allies in the fight have asked the Swiss Federal Court to postpone the tax so that they can contest it. Mr. Evans wrote: "They argue that consumers will effectively be hit three times for authors' rights if the latest tax comes into force: they already pay a tax on downloads, blank CDs and now also portable players."
