Apple, NBC May Be On the Mend
Sunday, January 20th, 2008 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
NBCs anti-Apple sentiment may be fading, which in turn could mean the networks programming might make a comeback at the iTunes Store. Apple and NBC parted ways last year when the broadcaster pulled its shows from the media download store over pricing issues.
The relationship between the two companies appears to have been at least partially repaired, according to The Financial Times. "Weve said all along that we admire Apple, that we want to be in business with Apple," commented NBC CEO Jeff Zucker.
He added "Were great fans of Steve Jobs."
Apple and NBC split in 2007 after failing to negotiate a new distribution contract for the networks programs at the iTunes Store. Apple claimed that NBC was demanding a rate hike upwards of US$4.99 per episode.
At the time, Apples vice president of iTunes stated "We are disappointed to see NBC leave iTunes because we would not agree to their dramatic price increase."
Losing NBCs programming also meant that Apple lost associated networks including USA and the SciFi Channel.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs did leave the door open for future negotiations with NBC. He commented "We hope theyll reconsider their decisions over time and maybe find out that iTunes and iPods are a great way to digitally distribute their content to tens or maybe hundreds of millions of customers around the world" following the networks departure.
