Apple Ramps Up iPhone Production
Monday, September 17th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple had been planning on manufacturing 1.54 million iPhones during its December quarter, but that number appears to be going up following a US$200 price cut early in September. Unnamed sources familiar with Apples iPhone production plans shared the information, according to TheStreet.com.
The unnamed source commented "That 1.54 million number is going up."
The production increase may be an indication that Apple is selling more iPhones than it anticipated. Dropping the 8GB iPhone price to $399 may also have helped spur sales.
"We believe that demand was stimulated almost immediately for the iPhone following the price cut on September 5 and that international partnerships should help sales next year," said UBS analyst Ben Reitzes.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed that the price cut was a move to more aggressively go after market share and to offer the iPhone to buyers that would otherwise not have been able to afford one.
Apple announced on Tuesday morning that the iPhone would go on sale in the U.K. on November 9. The deal Apple has with British cell carrier O2 also allows for iPhone sales through retailer Carphone Warehouse.
The Cupertino company has not yet revealed iPhone deals for Europe, although it has been planning to make an announcement before the end of the year.
