Apple Says iPhone 2.0.2 Update Improves 3G Connection
Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
An Apple spokesperson said on Tuesday that the latest iPhone software update, 2.0.2, improves communication with 3G networks. However, Apple stopped short of saying that all problems are resolved.
"The software update improves communication with 3G networks," said Jennifer Bowcock, according to USA Today
Recent reports, unconfirmed, place the blame for dropped 3G calls and slow downloads on the German maker of the 3G chipset, Infineon. Most reports have suggested that the problem is in software, however, and not the hardware. If thats true, the problem can be fixed with a firmware update.
Analysts such as Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray and Michael Gartenberg, formerly with Jupiter Research, dont think the issue is grave and is typical of early glitches in 3G systems.
User reactions, testing, and the Apple forums will give an indication of how successful the recent update will be and whether it solves the problems users have had with their iPhone 3G on the 3G networks. The problem has been experienced by only a few percent of users.
