Apple Sees Increased Consumer Trust, Disconnect With iPod Owners
Sunday, April 2nd, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Forrester Research, Inc. on Monday announced the results of its latest Technology Brand Scorecard, which found that Apple and TiVo were the only brands that increased in consumer trust between 2003 and 2005. "However," the firm said in a press release, "in our survey, iPod owners did not appear to identify with the Apple Computer brand, which could impede the so-called 'halo effect' that iPods might have on Macintosh sales."
Bose, Apple, and Dell led Forrester's brand trust rankings, while Bose, Dell, IBM, Pioneer, Zenith and Philips had the most brand potential and Microsoft, Sony, Panasonic, and HP had the highest brand adoption. The highest-rated companies overall were Bose, Dell, Sony, Panasonic and HP, while the lowest-rated were Toshiba, Hitachi, Microsoft, Gateway, and LG.
Overall, however, the firm's research found that Americans' trust in consumer electronics companies is on the decline. It said in the press release: "Forrester believes that the decline in trust from 2003 to 2005 is due to ubiquitous technologies like PCs, HDTVs, and MP3 players reaching more price-conscious, mainstream consumers. That's a major challenge for tech companies that must now sell to tech-averse customers who demonstrate little brand loyalty."
Forrester surveyed 4,732 U.S. households in September and October 2005, asking them questions about the trustworthiness of 48 technology brands. The 13-page report sells for US$775 and is available to the firm's WholeView2 clients.
