Apple Sells Millionth iPhone, Beats "End of September" Goal
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Apple Inc. announced Monday that it sold the one millionth iPhone on Sunday, September 9th, beating the companys stated goal of doing so by the end of September. All-told, the million-seller mark took 74 days, and took place after the company announced a US$200 price drop on the 8GB unit, dropping the 4GB model from its inventory.
"One million iPhones in 74 days -- it took almost two years to achieve this milestone with iPod," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. "We cant wait to get this revolutionary product into the hands of even more customers this holiday season."
When announced, Mr. Jobs said that the point of the price drop was to make the device "affordable for even more customers," corporate speak for wanting to make gains in market share. Some had suggested that iPhone demand could have been on the wane earlier than Apple had originally anticipated, but even if that was the case, Apples new price point has clearly found a sweet spot with the market.
