Apple iPhone Speed Compared on EDGE and 3G/UMTS

At the iPhone Infoblog in Germany, some timings were conducted between an Apple iPhone on the 2.7G/EDGE network and a Nokia E61i on the 3G/UMTS network. The rendering speed of the iPhone appeared to offset the UMTS network speed, and the net results were more or less a tie.
A YouTube video was posted, showing a side-by-side comparison of the two phones accessing Die Zeit (a German newspaper), eBay, and Applephoneinfo. Both phones were tested on the T-Mobile network. Both phones had the Wi-Fi system turned off. Times below are in seconds.

The author estimated that the 3G network there is 1.7 times faster, but that didnt seem to make a difference.
Others have also suggested that 3G is not that much faster than EDGE but has a greater demand on battery power, and that trade-off by Apple for the first generation iPhone once again appears justified.
