Audible Offers Podcast Measurement Service & DRM Tools

ONTARIO, CA -- Audible.com introduced Friday Wordcast, a new service aimed at Podcasters wishing to have data on how people are listening to their podcasts, and even how long the podcast is listened to. Announced at the Portable Media Expo in Ontario, CA, the service is currently in private beta, but will be offered to both Audible.com clients and outside podcasts alike. The company also announced a complementary tool that will prohibit users from e-mailing a podcast.

The service is aimed at podcasters looking to further develop an advertising model for their work. "By providing a way to track not just how many times the show is downloaded, but whether it is played back and for how long, Audible hopes to give podcasters some audience information," the company said in a statement.

The company did not offer details on how exactly it will work, but said the service can provide measurement information in Apple's iPod (or other Audible.com-compatible digital media devices), and through Audible's own client software.

The company will charging three cents per downloaded podcast to report whether a downloader listened, and for how long. For those attempting a subscription business model, the company will attach its DRM restrictions and report listenership for five cents per download. For a half cent per download, the company will insert an ad into the podcast.
