Australians Can Now Legally Rip CDs to iPods
Sunday, May 14th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Australia has passed new legislation legalizing such activities as ripping music from a CD and placing it on an iPod, according to PortalIT. The laws, which the country's attorney general called "commonsense amendments," also allow TV viewers to legally record programs, although they're supposed to delete them after one viewing.
As in the United States, downloading or uploading music and video from or to the Internet is still illegal, as is playing video and audio content to groups or using it for commercial purposes. New measures, such as on-the-spot fines, were added to help beef up anti-piracy efforts.
Australia has had an iTunes Music Store since last October.
