BW: Apple Will Open iPhone to Select Developers
Monday, October 15th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Apple will open iPhone development in 2008 to selected developers, according to BusinessWeek on Tuesday. An announcement is anticipated at Macworld on January 15th.
Those familiar with Apples plans told BusinessWeek that Apple will release a software development kit (SDK), but likely only to selected developers as they have done with the iPod.
Arik Hesseldahl and Olga Kharif wondered about the delay and pointed to some analysts who believe that key technologies needed for the most robust features had to wait for the roll out of Leopard.
In addition, it appears unlikely that AT&T will stand in the way. "Its up to Apple to decide whether third-party applications will go on the iPhone," says AT&T spokesman Michael Coe. "We have embraced third-party applications on other devices."
The BW authors suspect that some major players have already been given SDKs, including Electronic Arts and Google, although EA declined to comment and Google denied having early access.
