BW: Demand Rising for Used Apple iPhone 2Gs
Monday, September 1st, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
The unexpected has happened. Demand for Apples first generation iPhone is climbing, according to BusinessWeek on Tuesday.
David Chen, head of a company tha sells used electronics, reported that when the iPhone 3G launched, demand for the Apples original iPhone dropped. Now, however, prices are climbing.
A used iPhone 2G (2G/EDGE network) in good condition with 16 GB of RAM is worth US$300.00, up $50 from a month ago. Of course, he turns it around and sells it for much more, as much as $600.00 One reason is because the original iPhone is easily unlocked. Another is that it doesnt have the stigma of recent iPhone 3G network issues. Finally, customers overseas are less averse to used phones.
This could cause a short term problem for Apple, but in the long run, new Apple products will give customers much more desirable alternatives. For now, however, those merchants who deal with used iPhone 2Gs are riding the boom for as long as it lasts.
