Best Buy Launches Music Store, Joins Forces With Real, SanDisk
Wednesday, October 4th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Best Buy on Thursday unveiled a new digital music store powered by RealNetworks' Rhapsody 4.0 and designed to integrate with SanDisk's new Sansa e200R MP3 player. The retailer will make the music store software and the e200R available in its stores on Oct. 15, with an exclusive track from Diddy's new album, Press Play, available before it debuts on Oct. 17.
Jennifer Schaidler, Best Buy's vice-president of music, commented in a press release: "The Best Buy Digital Music Store and Sansa e200R Rhapsody are part of that goal allowing us to provide an end-to-end digital music solution that will deliver unique content and a premium customer experience."
Unfortunately, the Best Buy Digital Music Store is available only to Windows 2000 and XP users; Mac OS X visitors are directed to Rhapsody.com to listen to music within their Web browers. The service sells music for US$0.99 per song, or $14.99 per month for a subscription. A page on Best Buy's Web site lists all the MP3 players that are compatible with it.
Presumably, all of those devices work just as well as the Sansa e200R, but that device will come with a free two-month subscription to the Best Buy Digital Music Store. While SanDisk's Web site doesn't list that particular device, it seems to offer the same features as the standard e200 lineup: capacities ranging from 2GB ($139.99) to 8GB ($249.99); a 1.8-inch color display; the ability to play audio and video, as well as display photos; a digital FM tuner; integrated voice recording; a microSD expansion slot; and up to 20 hours of battery life.
Thanks to Electronista for the heads-up.
