Big Shows Get Big Boost from DVR, Helps Lesser Shows

Some of TVs biggest shows are getting a boost from deferred playback on DVRs, and lesser rated shows are also benefitting, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Shows that are deferred, then viewed are added to the live viewing numbers to get "absolute viewers." Foxs "House" and ABCs "Lost" led recently with House gaining 2.7M viewers in playback -- in addition to the 19 million who watched the show live. "Lost" added 2.5 million to its 10.8 million live viewers.
One show that has been struggling, "Friday Night Lights," also benefitted seeing a 17% jump thanks to DVR viewers.
"Its definitely consistent with what weve seen and with the overall argument that weve been making with the introduction of DVRs: that the big programs will get bigger in the DVR environment," said CBS Vision president and CBS research chief David Poltrack.
The DVR playback audience has been a major contention point regarding whether networks will be paid for deferred viewing. In addition, advertisers want to know what percentage of their audience is skipping over commercials during playback. Nielsen is currently stating that about 50% of the commercials are skipped.
