Bloomberg Columnist: The ROKR Phone is "Ugly, Chunky, and Boring"

Apple is "missing a beat" by having outsourced an iTunes phone to Motorola, according to Mark Gilbert of Bloomberg News. Instead, he wrote, Apple should have gone its own route for such a phone because the ROKR phone fails to deliver.

"The world doesn't want an iPhone made by Motorola Inc., any more than it wanted an iPod sporting Hewlett-Packard Co.'s logo," wrote Mr. Gilbert.. "The world wants Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs to don his black turtleneck and prance around a stage in California waving a bona fide Apple iPhone encased in white plastic, preferably featuring the intuitive software and click-wheel hardware interfaces that helped make the iPod such a hit."

Mr. Gilbert's criticisms center around what he calls the anonymous-looking nature of the ROKR, which is "ugly, chunky and boring." According to the editorial, iPod owners are not into being anonymous, and certainly aren't into ugly, chunky, and boring.

You can find Mr. Gilbert's full editorial at Bloomberg News.

The ROKR phone has not found much of a mainstream welcome as of yet, with criticisms coming in from different quarters. iPodObserver will be doing its own review of the phone in short order.
