Blu-ray To Go on Promotion Binge, Cut Prices
Monday, October 1st, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Kazuhiro Tsuga of Matsushita Electric Industrial told reporters at the Ceatec show being held in Chiba Japan this week that the Blu-ray manufacturers will start cutting prices and go on a promotional binge for the holiday season, according to C|Net News on Tuesday.
Matsushita Electric Industrial is the parent company of Panasonic. Mr. Tsunga predicted that he expects the price cuts to put the handwriting on the wall [for a Blu-ray win] by the end of the Christmas season or the end of the 1Q, 2008.
"The BD [Blu-ray disc] companies will try to do our best to promote Blu-ray," he said. "The studios want us to put money in to promote it. By the end of the year, you will see good products with very good promotion."
Work is also being done to decrease the price of slim Blu-ray players to increase its adoption in notebooks and desktop computers. In addition, Reuters reported that several new Blu-ray recorders were announced at the show by Matsushita
Previously, analysts expressed concern that Blu-ray could be confronted with a last minute defeat by HD DVD if they maintained the price separation over HD DVD players through the holidays. Now it appears that Blu-ray is ready to go toe-to-toe with HD DVD player prices to attract holiday customers and cash in on both the studio support and the customer perception that Blu-ray is superior.
