Business Week: Subscription iTMS Not Very Likely

Apple Computer continues to shun any interest in online subscription music services, like those of Napster and RealNetworks, according to music industry executives interviewed by Business Week magazine.

Two music executives have told BusinessWeek Online that earlier this summer, soon after Yahoo's announcement of its Music Unlimited subscription service, Apple asked music companies about their interest and potential financial terms of a subscription service. Reportedly, one of the label executives said Apple was concerned about what Amazon.com or Google (GOOG ) might do in this area.

"But, says the source, Apple seemed unlikely to make a move until a rival began forging inroads into its music empire," the report indicated.

Business Week is suggesting that Jobs is unlikely to turn to subscriptions until one of his competitors finds "a way to make subscriptions mainstream".
