CBS Records Returns, Joins iTunes
Thursday, December 14th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
The old CBS Records label name is back, and CBS Corp. is adding the content from its newly revived label to the iTunes Store. Forbes reports that CBS plans to use the label to help promote its artists and to showcase their music on CBS Paramount Television-produced shows.
CBS Records plans to distribute music, videos and other content through the iTunes Store and its own Web site. CDs will be available through partnerships with other labels or distributors. Eventually, the label plans to strike deals with additional online music services.
Leslie Moonves, president and chief executive of CBS Corp., commented "With more consumers choosing the online download model as the preferred way to purchase their favorite songs, we have an opportunity to use our unique and broad collection of media platforms to create a new music label paradigm for a small price of admission."
The CBS Records label was sold to Sony in 1988. After a few years, Sony dropped the name and absorbed the label's library into another music division. Since the name has not been used for about ten years, CBS was able to start using it again without paying any fees.
