CNBC: iPhone Could Create Enterprise Halo Effect
Thursday, March 13th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Just as the iPod created a halo effect for music player customers who bought an iPod and then embraced the Macintosh, the iPhones introduction into the enterprise could have the same halo effect for the Mac in the enterprise, according to Jim Goldman in his CNBC TechCheck on Friday.
"Remember those stories way back when? iPod customers who never thought theyd want an Apple computer would go in, buy an iPod, see a Mac, fall in love and buy one of those too?" Mr. Goldman wrote. "Seems like the same scenario could be shaping up for iPhone and enterprise customers."
Mr. Goldman pointed to a recent Andy Hargreaves analysis that suggested Mac sales in the enterprise are growing. Its unlikely that every one of those 2 millions Macs sold each quarter are all going to consumers. Mr. Hargreaves thinks that Mac usage in the enterprise could grow 2x to 3x over the next two years.
The result would be another 1 percent gain in Mac market share just due to the enterprise.
Several additional factors may also be at play. Computerworlds Mike Elgan noted on Friday that the iPhone UI will likely drive changes in the PC design. That will bring new focus to the Macintosh which can be expected to lead the PCs in that area. Also, the U.S. Navy on Thursday announced that proporietary systems are costing them too much and causing them to fall behind technologically. That announcement is likely to be noted by the entire U.S. Government.
