China iPhone May Drop 3G, Wi-Fi

Apple’s iPhone 3G may ship without 3G and Wi-Fi support in China if China Mobile gets its way. Apparently the cell carrier wants to sell the combination iPod and smartphone in a stripped down version to comply with Chinese regulations, according to cellular-news.
So far, 3G support in China is limited, but removing the ability to take advantage of the technology once it rolls out diminishes the value of the iPhone 3G as an Internet-ready device -- as does removing support for Wi-Fi networks.
While Apple has agreed to offer an unlocked version of the iPhone in markets where it is required to do so by law, the company so far hasn’t agreed to change the components in the device for any market or cell carrier. Apple also isn’t likely pleased with the prospect of shipping a hobbled version of its iPhone 3G that can’t even use Wi-Networks.
There is no official word yet on when to expect Apple’s iPhone to go on sale in China, but China Mobile has been negotiation with the Cupertino-based company again. "The talks with Apple to launch the iPhone device in China have resumed because Apple is not insisting on revenue-sharing anymore," said China Mobile spokesperson Rainie Lei.
China Mobile has not said which Chinese regulations the iPhone’s wireless features potentially violate.
