Chrysler Adds iPod Integration to "Most" 2006 Models

Apple Computer and the Chrysler Group announced Sunday that Chrysler would provide full iPod integration as an option in "most of its 2006 models," the first American automaker to do so. Chrysler said that some three million of its Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge cars in 2006 would come with this option, and some 2005 models can be retrofitted with the option.

Full iPod support will mean that drivers will be able to play their iPods through their car stereo system, and select their music by artist, album, or playlist directly on their car stereo, or through steering wheel controls. Information will be displayed on the car stereo's display.

Randy Ewers, director, Mopar Accessories Portfolio Team, the subsidiary that manufactures parts for Chrysler, said that, "Customers have been asking for iPod connectivity and we're excited to make it available to so many of our vehicles in 2006. We're providing the largest number and range of automobiles with iPod support of any automaker, allowing Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge owners to bring and listen to their entire music collections."

"We're thrilled that over three million Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge automobiles will offer great iPod connectivity in 2006," Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing, said in a statement. "Over 40 percent of all cars sold in the US in 2006 will offer iPod connectivity."

Apple said that currently there are 16 auto makers offering some form of iPod support, though Chrysler's announcement makes it one of the largest to offer it across the majority of its product line. In addition, many third party car stereo manufacturers are offering iPod support in their products.

Chrysler will be offering the iPod Integration Kit for Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge models for US$175. Installation will be extra. The option will be available in the Spring of 2006.
