Circuit City Will Trade-in HD DVD Players for Blu-ray - With Catches

Circuit City has confirmed that it will, upon request, accept the return of a previously purchased HD DVD player and charge the difference for a new Blu-ray player, according to High-Def Digest. However, there are some strings attached.
The offer only applies to HD DVD players purchased in the last 90 days. The player must be returned in the original box with all the accessories and a sales receipt must be presented. Customers can then pay the difference in retail prices for a Blu-ray player (or receive a gift card).
Finally, the offer only applies to HD DVD players, not to movie titles on HD DVD discs. In addition, Gizmodo reported that the offer is only avaialble to those who know about the offer and ask about it.
The same offer was launched in Japan recently, and that suggests that some financial accommodations are being made behind the scenes so that Circuit City makes, not loses, money on this offer.
