Cisco, Apple Resume iPhone Negotiations

Apple and Cisco have both agreed to to extend the deadline for Apple to respond to a lawsuit over the use of the iPhone name. The companies plan to use the time to negotiate an agreement over trademarks and product interoperability.
Cisco has owned the iPhone trademark since 2000, and the company claims it has been willing to allow Apple to use the name. Cisco CEO John Chambers commented "All we ask is that people respect our trademarks and our intellectual property. We would have traded that for just interoperability."
After Apple stopped the negotiation and announced its iPhone product, Cisco files a lawsuit claiming that Apple was infringing on trademarks it owns. Apple COO Tim Cook called the lawsuit "silly" during the company's first quarter financial earnings conference call.
The two companies had been negotiating over terms of use for the iPhone name, but the talks broke off just before Apple introduced the iPhone smartphone at Macworld Expo 2007 in January. Cisco had introduced its VoIP iPhone product shortly before Macworld Expo.
