Cologne Sees Long Lines for German iPhone Launch
Thursday, November 8th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Several hundred soon-to-be iPhone customers lined up in the rain outside a Deutsche Telekom shop in Cologne early Friday to be among the first in Germany to buy Apples combination iPod and smart phone. The device was released first at the T-Mobile owned store, and later in the day went on sale in the rest of the country, according to Reuters.
Just like the iPhone launch in the United States, store employees cheered as the first customers entered the store shortly after midnight.
T-Mobiles Managing Director, Philipp Humm, was on hand for the event. Johannes Krause purchased the first iPhone sold in the country.
In Frankfurt, however, the iPhone launched with a decidedly more quiet tone. Customers didnt line up, and most people on the streets had no idea the iPhone launch was under way.
Uwe Berger waited alone outside a Frankfurt T-Mobile store for over an hour waiting for the doors to open. "Im astonished theres no one else here," he said.
The iPhone is available in Germany for €399 (about US$587.82). Monthly service contracts with T-Mobile, the exclusive iPhone carrier in Germany, are priced starting at €49 (about $72.19).
