Data caps, no MMS for iPhone 3G in Norway
Sunday, June 29th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Despite rumors that Apples iPhone 3G will get MMS, or multimedia message support, it looks like that wont be the case in at least Norway. The lack of MMS also comes with surprisingly low data caps, according to setteB.IT (English translation).
The lack of MMS support in Norway may well be an indication of what to expect in other countries, too. So far Apple hasnt shown much interest in adding support for sending pictures and video via text messages, which has been a disappointment to some iPhone users that were accustomed to the feature before switching to the combination iPod and smartphone.
Netcom, Apples iPhone partner in Norway, will be offering three plans when the handheld goes on sale in July. The 100 minute plan includes 100 SMS messages, and a surprisingly low 100MB data cap. The 250 minute plan comes with 250 text messages and only 250MB of data, and the 1000 minute plan includes 1000 SMS messages and 1GB of data.
The data caps some carriers are imposing are upsetting many potential iPhone buyers. Customers in Canada are up in arms as well, and have been signing an online petition in an attempt to convince Rogers to change its announced rates.
Despite the fact that the cell carriers are setting their own rates and limitations on iPhone data plans, many potential customers are taking their frustration out on Apple. That anger could have a negative impact on the Cupertino company, and will likely stop some from snatching up the soon to be released second generation iPhone.
Apples iPhone 3G is set to go on sale in about 20 countries on July 11. It will include support for 3G wireless data networks, a built-in GPS, and native support for Microsoft Exchange networks.
