Developers Face Technical, Legal Challenges with iPhone

At the Office 2.0 Conference this week in San Francisco, notable developers like SAP, spoke to the technical and legal challenges they face creating software for the iPhone, according to RegDeveloper on Friday.

Delegates complained about the fact that Safari in iPhone lacks common Web plug-ins and that needless complicates the process of creating online services for the device.

The complaints are not limited to small developers or Web 2.0 startups. SAP added their voice, saying that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) prevents them from delivering their software for the iPhone, even though they have proof of concept code ready.

Apple has argued that developers should use AJAX to develop applications for the iPhone. However, a former executive with SAP, Dennis Moore, said it’s not enough to write only to the browser. "A rich internet experience is important but it’s not sufficient to meet people’s needs yet. I call on Apple to open up the platform so people can deploy on it," Mr. Moore said.

Others supported that view. T.J. Kang, CEO of ThinkFree, said he knew of developers who had wasted two man-months grappling with the deficiencies in the iPhone’s Safari. "It’s like the early days of Java. Not like write once and run everywhere. It’s a lot like write once debug and modify everywhere. It’s something we have to live with," Mr. Kang said.

The business development community seems willing and anxious to help Apple in the enterprise, but Apple has resisted so far. SAP’s senior VP of Imagineering, Denis Browne, hoped that Apple would improve the iPhone support for Flash and Java. Baring some of the changes needed to improve the iPhone as a business tool, SAP appears ready to give up.
