DirecTV Plans for 100 Channels of HDTV Progressing

DirecTV executive Michael Palkovic said that his company is moving ahead with plans to launch 100 HDTV channels this year, according to MultiChannel News. However, he also noted that some will be duplicated sports channels, such as NFL Sunday Ticket, and that reduces the number of unique channels.

Palkovic said that, "DirecTV already has about 70 HD channels under contract and that number is growing.... We’re talking USA [Network], Sci Fi [Channel], some of the Turner [Broadcasting System] networks, The Weather Channel, mainstream programming that’s been around for a long time that’s going to make the leap to HD."

In addition, one of the goals for DirecTV has been to expand its HD offerings of local channels. They now provide local broadcast channels to 53 cities comprising 67 percent of U.S. households.

The DirecTV move has to be considered very serious competition in the battle of the video giants for attention in the U.S. household for video entertainment. One advantage the satellite providers believe they have is the virtually unlimited ability to provide HD channels via satellite while cable operators scramble to allocate HD bandwidth.
