Dow Jones: Hon Hai Will Get iPhone 3G Order

Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. will get an exclusive contract to assemble a more advanced version of the iPhone, according to Dow Jones Newswires on Friday. Wei Yi Lim reported that an person familiar with the situation divulged the information to Dow Jones.

Most observers believe this is the so-called iPhone 3G.

Mr. Lim reported that, previously, "A Hon Hai official, who declined to be named, told Dow Jones Newswires that the company was in talks with Apple for the supply of a ’more advanced version’ of the current iPhone. The Hon Hai official declined to provide further details." The Dow Jones report suggested those were possibly two different people.

Hon Hai is Taiwan’s largest contract manufacturer of electronic products, according to Dow Jones.

Earlier in the week, iPO reported that a Gartner Analyst, Ken Dulaney had heard rumors from Asia about a potential order for 10M additional 3G iPhones. Some sites misconstrued that as an official Gartner prediction, and on Thursday, Gartner’s Bob Hafner clarified that it was not.
