Editorial - Another Major Hollywood Video Deal Without Apple

The wagons are circling. Everyone is making deals to supply video to customers in every way imaginable. Lionsgate Entertainment struck a deal recently with EchoStar Communications in Denver to deliver High-Definition movies on demand. Customers with the right satellite receiver will be able to tune to channel 9467 and select HD movies via pay-per-view.
Recently I conducted an interview with Motorola as they seek to support the cable companies in their initiatives to retain viewers on their side of the fence. I also reported on Disney's deal with Comcast. But some writers are thinking that they can cut the coaxial cable and be free of broadcast TV.
Apple has been strangely silent on their agreements with various Hollywood studios, besides those owned by Disney. Moreover, it's becoming clear that the traditional carriers, cable and satellite, are exercising their current bandwidth strengths when it comes to delivering high definition video. The war continues, and we're all eagerly awaiting to see what Apple announces at Macworld on January 9th, 2007.
