Eminem Sues Apple Over Music Downloads

Rap singer Eminem filed a law suit against Apple Inc. on Monday in an attempt to block the company from selling his songs through the iTunes Store. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit, and alleged that the company is not authorized to sell his music as electronic downloads, according to The Detroit News.
Eminem’s legal team claimed that his contract with Universal Music Group does not include rights for the label to distribute his music as downloads. As such, that means Apple is violating the copyrights by offering the tracks for download.
Although Apple has not commented on the case, presumably it has assumed that Universal would have secured the rights for electronic distribution before including the tracks at the iTunes Store.
The Eminem suit is likely only the first of many as more artists take a more aggressive stance in defending their licensing rights, and ultimately their cut of the music industry revenue.
Owen Sloane of Berger Kahn, one of the attorneys representing Eminem, commented "There are a number of unresolved issues" regarding artist rights. "You’re going to see more of these suits."
As of Tuesday morning, Eminem’s music was still available at the iTunes Store.
