Fifth Generation iPods Could Sport New Scroll Wheels
Monday, August 8th, 2005 at 4:00 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Apple Computer is going to be switching to an in-house scroll wheel for 5th generation iPods, according to a report from AppleInsider. The in-house solution will replace the scroll wheel developed by Synaptics that was used in the 2nd, third, and fourth generation iPods. The reason for the switch is to maintain tighter control over the development of new iPods, and to possibly bring down costs.
Sources cited include Synaptics itself, which has warned of decreasing revenues in the coming quarter, and American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu, who said that the decrease is due to technology shifts at Apple. The source for the move to an in-house solution is not named.
