Financial Times: Japanese iTMS Will Challenge Sony

The Financial Times of London said Thursday that Wednesday's launch of the iTunes Music Store in Japan will challenge Sony. The Japanese electronics power house has been seen as struggling in recent years, especially in the portable music player market it created with the transistor radio, and then later, the Walkman. The newspaper reported that the launch of the Japanese iTMS "is expected to win even more users over to Apple's iPod digital music player, which has taken the lead in a market Sony used to dominate."
The report quoted Ken Kitabayashi of Nomura Research Institute in Tokyo as saying, "The price is quite attractive. I think the market will obviously grow quite strongly." Apple's �150-200 price tag for downloads is cheaper than Sony's own Mora service, which charges �210 per song. There are additional details at the Financial Times.
