Flash Memory Prices Dropping

Flash memory prices have been dropping since January, and Samsung and SanDisk are dumping chips on the market in an effort to reduce inventories. DigiTimes is reporting that Samsung is stuck with a memory glut thanks to competition from SanDisk and lower than expected iPod nano sales.
SanDisk recently started lowering its Flash memory prices, and has been quoting US$30 to retailers for 1GB flash memory cards. Samsung followed suit, and dropped it's 1GB compact flash memory card to $22.
Overall, manufacturer's memory prices have dropped 44 percent from January to March for 1GB chips. 4GB chips saw the most dramatic decline, dropping 56 percent in the same time frame.
The memory glut could turn into good news for companies like Apple that depend on the chips for Flash-based memory for digital music players: The lower memory cost could translate to higher profits.
